Geographical situation
Municipality of Karlovo is situated in the north part of Plovdiv District. Total area of the municipality is 1 090 km2 which represents 1% of the country's total area. On the north it borders with Lovech District, on east - with Municipality of Pavel Bania, on south - with Municipality of Brezovo, Municipality of Hisaria, and Municipality of Kaloyanovo, and on west - it borders with municipalities of Koprivshtitza and Pirdop.     
The Sub-Balkan highway Sofia - Burgas (Road E-78) passes through Karlovo Municipality, and also the railway from Sofia to Burgas passes through with a railway-fork to Plovdiv. A well-developed road network exists, providing easy connections between different settlements in the municipality and very good communications with Plovdiv and Haskovo districts. The municipality doesn't border with any frontier-posts.   
   



Topographic characteristics
The relief of Karlovo Municipality is diverse:  flat, hilly, and mountainous. Part of the municipal territories is situated on the south side of Stara Planina Mountain and part of it is on the north side of Sredna Gora Mountain. Considerable part of the municipal terrain has a valley character, and on its territory two fields are situated - The Karlovo and Kalofer fields - the Eastern Sub-Balkan fields. The Karlovo valley represents a lower earth plot, limited on north by the steep sides of Central Stara Planina Mountain, on south it is limited by the north slanting sides of Sashtinska Sredna Gora Mountain, on west - by the transverse hill Koznitza, and on south - by the transverse hill Strandjata. Orientation of the valley is northwest, as in that direction it is ascending and narrowing. The altitude in the valley varies between 280 and 560 m (on the ridge of Stara Planina Mountain it reaches 2376 m - the Botev Summit).       
 
Climate
The region of Karlovo Municipality is situated in the European Continental climatic region, Transitional continental climatic sub-region.   The climate of the region is temperate continental, with mild and warm summers, refreshed by the wind coming down the Stara Planina Mountain, and snowy winters. The average January temperature is 0.1 °C (with an absolute minimum of -25.8 °C). The average July temperature is 22.9 °C (with an absolute maximum of 39.6 °C). As a result of relatively not very warm summer and relatively mild winter, the average temperature amplitude is around 22°Ñ. Average total annual rainfall is 694mm, being highest in the summer (221mm) and lowest in the winter (169mm). 
The predominant wind direction is northwest - 22.35 % and north - 23.6 %. The most unusual winds are the southwest winds - 3.1 %.

Population
The population of Municipality of Karlovo according to statistical data from July 2007 is 63 462 citizens, inhabiting four towns and 23 villages. The predictions are for a gradual decrease of municipal population. Revenues of the population are formed by salaries obtained in public and private companies in agriculture, forestry sector, tourism, and services.  In Municipality of Karlovo there are not closed production lines but there is a diminished volume of productivity in the following industrial sectors: machinery construction sector and food processing industry.
